Important Milestone
This is an important milestone for Shell in terms of increasing security.
Background
Shell is an international energy company with expertise in the exploration, production, refining and marketing of oil and natural gas, and the manufacturing and marketing of chemicals.
The company has operations in over 70 countries, produces around 3.7 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and has 44,000 service stations worldwide. This makes it not only the globe's largest energy company but also one of the largest organisations in the world by revenue.
The Challenge
Shell Denmark required a cash management system for its petrol stations which would not only increase security for its staff but would also deliver efficiencies in the cash cycle.
For years, service stations have been the target of robberies which not only have the obvious financial consequences, but also take a psychological toll on staff.
A robbery can be a violent experience that leaves staff with lasting mental scars. Therefore, it is difficult to recruit new employees to service stations where their safety cannot be guaranteed.
“The system is helping us to increase the security and efficiency of our cash handling process. The site staff have been very positive towards the initiative. This is an important milestone for Shell in terms of increasing security.”
Maria Beck-Tange,
Retail Director, Shell Denmark.
The Solution
Shell chose SafePay, Sesami's closed cash handling system for retailers.
With SafePay, cash is kept secure and unexposed from the moment it is handed to the cashier until it arrives at the cash-counting centre.
Once cash has been deposited into SafePay at the point of sale, staff no longer have access to it so robbers always come away empty-handed. Clear signage outside the petrol station creates a further deterrent.
SafePay gives each petrol station full control over its cash flow and automatically authenticates the cash being paid in.
Customer Benefits
Without the manual handling of cash, a safer working environment has been achieved. Staff feel more secure and have more time to spend on other tasks.
In addition, cash handling processes have been streamlined and cash differences eliminated, leading to a reduction in back-office administration.
